(Still thinking about improvements, but leaning ever more strongly towards JavaScript. I still like the idea of using a similar approach as used in other places of my ancient Tripod website, using data structure stored in a JS files. Simpler data structures? But it still feels awkward, and I've started playing with the approach that imports the data files via simple selections.)
